Some topics are never up for discussion. Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler lifts the veil on high stakes gambling in a whole new way.

Gambling is a topic that is still a soft spot for many. Like politics, finances and religion, it's often considered taboo or a sensitive matter not meant for polite conversations.

Over the past few years, the curtain has been lifted and light has been shone on many of these delicate or sensitive topics.

Films, animations, comics and other creative outlets express opinions on the topics that you shouldn't discuss with peers. Now gambling has been shifted into the spotlight with the popularity of the Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler manga series.

What is Kakegurui?

Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler is an anime television series released on Netflix. The show revolves around the students of Hyakkaou Private Academy. The main storyline is about one specific student who arrives at the school and turns things upside down with a 'gamble for fun' attitude.

In the prestige Hyakkaou Private Academy, all students rank according to their gambling winnings. For the top-ranking winners, there is fame and fortune. These winners dominate and the losers, like in any high school, are subject to teasing from the winners.

With Yumeko Jabami's arrival at the school, she immediately shakes things up with her love for high-stakes gambling. Her methods are unheard of and soon she has everyone in a frenzy, breaking away from the order.

It's a crowd-pleaser due to the intriguing plot with the high-stakes, compulsive gambler Yumeko taking on Kirari Momobami. The latter is the queen of the school, an ice-cold president and student council member that rules over the Academy. The series is full of with twists and turns that will keep you entertained.

This highly popular series is an adaptation of the Kakegurui manga by writer Homura Kawamoto and illustrator Toru Naomura. To date, they’ve released seven volumes of this popular manga comic.

The film adaptation is directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa and the Manga Series is created by MAPPA Animation Studio.

Why is it so popular?

Currently, both the anime and the Netflix adaptation of the anime are available with two seasons. The manga adaption released in 2017 and many are wondering why it is suddenly becoming popular.

The story is popular because of the intriguing storytelling method used through poker games and liar's dice. Not only is the storyline one that intrigues, but the anime has made it clear that there is a market open for anime shows relating to poker and gambling.

The series also reveals the character, mental endurance, and manipulation skills that often come into play with high-stakes gambling.

Apart from the gambling element, the show is highly popular due to the strong female lead. In recent years there has been an increased interest in leading female characters worldwide. In Kakegurui, women are once more being portrayed as equal to men. Making it popular and attractive to both male and female viewers.

Shining the light on gambling in Japan

Another reason for the popularity of Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler could be the current regulatory changes in Japan.

In 2016, the Japanese government announced the start of legalisation procedures for gambling within Japan. The finer details were set for finalisation via an implementation bill which would take a number of months. Until the bill's implementation, gambling is still illegal and a taboo subject in the region.

Kakegurui addresses this and it also shows both the highs and lows that come with gambling activities. Many believe that this anime is risky as it dares to be extremely open about a taboo subject.
