    Novomatic AI encouraging responsible gambling through innovative platform

    The company has seen significant change and evolution over the last few years and they extensively explored more Artificial Intelligence (AI) environments to offer a responsible gambling solution to benefit online casino operators and players from all over the world.

    Novomatic’s origin story

    Based in Austria in 1980, Novomatic kicked off their journey into casino games by producing the first Admiral gaming machines. These slot machines gained popularity in Europe as players grasped the opportunity to take a spin on the reels to win cash prizes.

    Despite only being in business for 40 years, the company has grown in leaps and bounds since 1984 when they first developed the micro processing unit which became the basis for all casino games. American Poker II was launched just 5 years later and has gone down in history as “The Legend” of casino game machines.

    Business took on an international flavour in 1993 when Novomatic grew their business in Germany, Norway, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Namibia and Botswana and provided electronic gaming machines there. And, in 1995, Novomatic was awarded its first gambling license in North America by receiving the necessary paperwork to offer gambling services in Ontario, Canada.

    Multiplayer solution

    A few years later, 1997 saw the launch of multi-player machines where gamblers were able to place bets on the TouchBet Roulette game which revolutionized live casino games. No longer restricted by the size of the casino table, up to 250 players could now play at any given time.

    Novomatic was a pioneer in the responsible gambling initiatives and launched a staff training programme in 2011. Just 10 years later, the Greentube Division has bolstered its player protection initiatives by integrating with Neccton’s AI-based responsible gaming solution which automatically engages with players to encourage better decision making as it points out potentially harmful gaming behaviours.

    Back office monitoring

    By tracking specific metrics, the system pays attention to player behaviour that indicates the possibility that the gamers may be risking more than they can afford to lose, chasing losses, in session deposits, failed payments and cancelled withdrawal requests.

    The responsible gambling solution then communicates this information with customized messaging which allows for players to take a step back and reconsider the best way forward in the light of their online gambling choices.

    Playtech approach

    Playtech, and many other online casino game providers, have also been doing their best to promote responsible gambling through their games of chance. While Playtech may not have started out in land-based casinos with electronic gaming machines, they too have incorporated artificial intelligence through the use of their AI-based Bet Buddy platform to offer a real-time responsible gambling solution.

    After recently partnering with the Betting and Gaming Council and the Responsible Gambling Council, Playtech has committed to promoting responsible gaming through:

    • An increase of safer gambling messages across online casino sites and directly to players.
    • The setting up of interventions should players spend more time or money beyond normal preset patterns.
    • The active promotion of deposit limits.

    While in-game messaging is easy to implement, knowing when and how those messages will have the most impact is the key to real change.

    Given the quantity of information available to online casinos and casino game software providers, it is encouraging to see the role players take a proactive approach to ensure that gambling remains fun.
