With the upcoming US elections, we get to see the candidates go up against one another in heated debates. The idea behind them is to highlight the opponent's weakness in their presidential plan while placing focus on your own strengths.

Kamala managed to strike while it was hot, leaving Trump off the mark and even defensive at times. It seems Harris was fully prepped and ready to take on Trump, who, in turn, stated that he doesn’t want to face Harris in a debate again anytime soon.

The event was quite popular among those who watched it, with various opinions coming to the forefront.

Hot topics from the debate

The Harris-Trump presidential debate has been one of the hottest topics, with plenty of bashing and criticism. The main purpose was to attack first and find an ‘in’ as the next hopeful president of the country.

It’s clear that voters are hungry for change, and in this debate, it appears that both candidates were vying for the honour of being considered the ones who could do exactly that.

The abortion debate

One hot topic discussed in length was the vetoing of the federal abortion law if it should pass in Congress. Trump stated that he would not need to ban it because he wouldn’t be signing it and continued to say that there is no reason to consider that everyone is happy with the termination of Roe v. Wade.

On the other hand, Harris made the pledge that if the bill is passed to put back the protections of Roe v. Wade, she would sign it into law if elected president. Harris also said that voters should be aware that if Trump gets re-elected, a national abortion ban could be signed into law instead.

Harris goes on the attack

Throughout the debate, one of Harris' primary missions was to bait Trump into missing opportunities. That is why, instead of addressing his strongest issue, which is the concerns about inflation and the cost of living, she kept him busy with attacks on abortion rights, the Project 2025 policy, and more.

It seemed like Trump was grasping at straws instead of coming up with any valid retort.

Saying it straight

Throughout the debate, Trump had a lot to say about Biden, his campaign and the way he handled things. At this point, this seemed senseless and insulting to Kamala Harris.

The latter, however, quickly put him back in order when she said, “It is important to remind the former president: You’re not running against Joe Biden; you are running against me.” She also made it very clear that she is neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump.

Current opinion on Trump's plans

According to a study by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, former President Donald Trump’s second-term policy proposals, which include mass deportations and massive tariffs on all foreign goods, will severely impact the American economy.

According to the study, these plans are bound to lead to a weaker economic growth while simultaneously leading to a higher inflation and lower employment rates. It also states that damages from this plan can follow the USA all the way to 2040.

Warwick McKibbin (one of the researchers on the study) believes that the mass deportations of undocumented immigrants will be the most damaging aspect of Trump’s proposals. Based on the findings, this would cause a supply shock to food prices, and McKibbin continued with a rhetorical question on what would happen if you removed 16% of the work force from agriculture.

Another strong point brought forth is that taxing foreigners will be more damaging than good. In the debate, Harris accused Trump of being a “dictator wannabe”.

There’s no doubt that it was a very fierce debate, and both candidates faced some difficulties and challenges throughout. However, it was Trump who didn’t want to go up against Harris in a debate again any time soon. And according to many, it makes sense, considering he is the one with the most to lose at the end of the day.

The upcoming election and outcome prediction

There have been a number of surprises with the upcoming elections. Former Republican congresswoman Barbara Comstock stated that while she will be voting for Kalama Harris, she is still very much a Republican.

She was not alone in her choice and was, in fact, joined by former Republican congressman Denver Riggleman and the former Trump administration official Olivia Troye. Both have been seen criticising Trump's plans and actions in the last couple of months.

It's also been evident that Harris’ courting of Republicans throughout her campaign has been rather successful. In fact she’s received the backing of various elected officials which includes staffers from the former Bush and Reagan administrations.

What do the polls say?

Election Day is looming, and right now, the signs point towards Harris taking the lead in Georgia, one of the key swing states.

The data shows that the vice president received 51% of support and likely voters from the state, whereas Trump only received 48%. According to the polls, it shows that more Georgians believe Harris is the candidate who will protect democracy and help the middle class. And when it comes down to the abortion issue, Harris takes the lead with 18 points.

When it comes to matters like handling immigration, we see Trump taking the lead with a solid 15 points. At this time, we can only keep a close eye on the developments as we wait for Election Day to see which candidate will take away the majority of the votes.

Each has some plans and ideals that voters feel strongly about, which makes this a challenging voting session. Until we reach Election Day, we can expect both parties to continue fighting for a majority vote as they reveal more about their plans and court important head figures for more votes.

The presidential election will take place on November 5th, 2024, and the winner will serve a four-year term in the White House.
