For the past couple of weeks, the US elections have been one of the hottest topics across the globe. So much happened, and there was an increase in speculation and discussion regarding who’d reign victorious between Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Talk is just talk, and at the end of the day, the votes had the final say, seeing a disappointing step back for Harris and a historical moment for Trump and his campaign.

The road to victory

For Trump, the odds haven’t quite been in his favour, especially considering his loss in the 2020 election, the various legal challenges along the way, and the recent debate between himself and Kamala Harris, which looked like it was swaying voters in the other direction.

But history has been made, as Donald Trump has officially won the 2024 US presidential election. Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, securing 312 electoral votes, which is an achievement considering that he only needed 270 votes to win.

This victory was marked by a stunning sweep of all seven swing states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

With his campaign focusing heavily on border security, immigration, and the economy, he managed to capture the interest of many voters. Despite his legal challenges and his status as a criminal convict, he managed to sway the votes in his favour.

The final confirmation of his win is expected to occur through the Electoral College process set to take place on 17 December 2024, along with the official counting of votes by Congress on the 6th of January 2025.

What makes the win historical?

Various factors contribute to Donald Trump’s 2024 victory in the US presidential election, being historical.

One of the main reasons is that Trump is now the second president in US history to have managed to serve in non-consecutive terms. Grover Cleveland being the first.

Another big feat for Trump is that at age 78, he is the oldest to be elected to the presidency. And, of course, we can’t forget the fact that Trump is the first US president with a felony conviction. In a world of black and white, you can consider him multi-coloured.

Trump lost the 2020 election after facing various legal challenges, but somehow, he overcame them and returned to power with the 2024 election victory.

Looking at the votes

When discussing the election, you can’t help but focus on the voter demographic and the reasons Trump gained so much support here.

Trump received a lot of support from voters for several reasons. One of the primary reasons is economic concerns, as many voters currently experience dissatisfaction with their financial situation and the state of the economy.

About half of the voters believe they are in a worse financial situation today than they were four years ago. It’s this frustration that drives many and their desire for change.

Another reason he gained support is because he comes across as a leader who is capable of bringing change. He was the most popular among those focused on leadership and change.

It doesn’t hurt that Trump’s campaign effectively focused on the economic prosperity experienced throughout his previous term. For the nostalgic voters who were thinking back to better days, this played a role in swaying their votes.

One thing that also surfaced during the election was the deep political divisions seen throughout while Trump gathered strength through his followers, who remained motivated and loyal.

Another area where Trump managed to gain a lot of voters is in the Black and Latino community, drawing in most men. He also caught the attention of white voters without a college education.

The implications for America

Trump’s presidency will have a large impact on the US in various sectors. One of the first sectors where you can expect change is the economy, which is affected by expected changes to economic policies.

Trump is known for his America First approach, which means we can expect an increase in imports to protect the domestic industries. While it could mean higher consumer prices, it will benefit American manufacturers.

Another economic change is a cut in tax and deregulation of policies, which could result in growing businesses but also increase the national deficit.

It is also expected that stricter immigration policies will be put in place, which could ultimately impact the labour market and the lives of immigrants residing in the US.

One of the concerns is Trump’s focus on trade deal renegotiations and new tariffs to be implemented, which at the end of the day, can result in strained relationships with some of the key trading partners. Not to mention the possibility of increased spending on defence and the assertiveness of the military. With this peace-through-strength approach, anything can happen.

In terms of climate change, we can expect a rollback of several environmental regulations to fight against the changing climate.

What is to come for the gambling industry?

For the gambling industry, there are several possible changes that could have a big impact. One such change is the push for fewer regulations, which could ultimately benefit both land-based and online casino sectors.

We may also see a push towards more sports betting action, meaning it could be spread across more states and, therefore, increase the industry revenue.

We could also be looking at lower taxes for casinos and other gambling businesses thanks to the tax policies. With increased efforts to crack down on illegal gambling, licensed operators could flourish as competition is reduced.

Changes expected in terms of immigration policies could have a direct impact on the flow of overseas gamblers and workers in US casinos. This will have a domino effect on the labour market and its customer base.

At the end of the day, Donald Trump’s second term as president comes with a mixed bag of challenges and opportunities for all industries, especially the gambling trade.

Noteworthy reactions

While former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama expressed pride in Kamala Harris, Piers Morgan personally congratulated Trump on what he calls to be the ‘greatest comeback in political history’.

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, congratulated the president and expressed eagerness to strengthen the alliance between the US and Israel. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Trump, focusing on their friendship and shared values.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Ukraine congratulated Trump and expressed his hopes to see stronger US leadership.
