When it comes to sports, the narrative of early development is often seen as the key to success. We've all heard the stories of young athletes breaking records, early specialisation, and immense talent.

But today, we're here to celebrate a different kind of success. We're here to explore the journeys of athletes who defied traditional timelines, and who started their sports journey much later than most. These are the stories of perseverance and determination that remind us that it is never too late to live out your passion.

Take a look at some remarkable sports stories about extraordinary athletes who started their careers late but went on to achieve great success.

Herschel Walker

Herschel Walker, born on the 3rd of March 1962 in Augusta, Georgia, is one of the most remarkable examples of an athlete who started late in his career but still achieved excellence. Walker is known for his achievements in American football.

He started playing football in college, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a junior and was chosen for the NFL at 22. His professional career started to rise when he was in his mid-20s.

He was part of many professional football clubs, including the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles. He started with the New Jersey Generals in 1983 and retired from playing for the Dallas Cowboys in 1997.

Walker snagged a few records, holding the USFL record for all-time rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns.

While he may not have made much history on the field, he did off the field by being the primary player and namesake of the largest trade in NFL history, “The Herschel Walker Trade”.

Other activities

What makes Walker's story more impressive is that after retirement, he appeared as a guest on an MMA show in 2007, but later, in 2009, he announced that an MMA promotion company had signed him to compete in the heavyweight division.

Walker is not only good at sports but also cooking, where in 2014, he won season 3 of Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off. In 2022, he was also the nominee for the U.S. Senate elections. During an interview in 2011, Walker stated, “I’ve told everyone that at 50, I might try football again to show people I can do that.”

Kelly Slater

Kelly Slater, born February 11, 1972, is often considered one of the greatest professionals ever.

Slater is a professional surfer, best known for being crowned World Surf League champion 11 times. He holds 56 Championship Tour victories.

Although Slater was a competitive surfer from a young age, he achieved a breakthrough in his late teens and continued to compete at the highest level into his 40s.

His first Championship win was in 1992 at the age of 20. Despite facing stiff competition from younger surfers throughout the years, he continued to dominate the sport. Slater, now in his 50s, remains one of the most successful and well-known surfers worldwide.

In 2022, Slater won his eighth Pro Pipeline surfing title, 30 years after his first win. He announced in 2023 that he is training for the 2024 Olympics qualifier. He can testify that giving your best performance in sports can be achieved with passion, dedication, and adaptability.

Other activities

Slater is not only riding waves in the water, but he is also rocking the sound waves. He is a guitarist and has performed with famous musicians in the past. In the 1990s, Slater joined a band called The Surfers with Rob Machado and Peter King, and they released an album in 1998 titled Songs from the Pipe.

That is not all! Slater also appeared on seven episodes of Baywatch during the 1990s. He appeared in an episode on the reality show The Girls Next Door and starred in many surf films. Activision published a video game named Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer by Treyarch, released in 2002. It can be said that Slater is talented and not afraid to show off his talent, on and off the camera.

Bernard Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins was born on January 15, 1965, and is no stranger to boxing fans. Hopkins began his professional boxing career at 23 and went on to become the greatest middleweight in boxing history.

He held multiple world championships in different weight classes, including the middleweight title from 2001 to 2005 and the lineal light heavyweight title from 2011 to 2012.

Hopkins continued to fight at an elite level until he was in his 40s, winning a world championship at 49. This achievement marked him the oldest boxer in history to win a world title. He retired at 51, with the average boxer retiring in their late 30s.

Hopkins's dedication to the sport made him a living example that age is not always an obstacle when chasing achievements in sports.

Tom Brady

Tom Brady was born on August 3, 1977. He is a former American professional football player who played in the NFL for 23 seasons. Brady's career began in 2000 when he was 22, and the New England Patriots drafted him in the 6th round. His rise to football superhero wasn't immediate. He became the starting quarterback in his second season.

Brady was not starting his career particularly late, but his longevity in the NFL has been impressive. Many quarterbacks peak and retire before they reach 40, but not Brady.

He continued to play at an elite level until he was 45. Brady’s success as a quarterback has been attributed to his work ethic, competitive spirit, and intelligence.

Brady played 381 games in 23 seasons, the most for an NFL quarterback. Brady retired after the 2022 season but remains a good influence in the world of NFL as a whole. Even after his retirement, his involvement in the sport makes him a significant figure in professional sports and one of the richest athletes in the world.

Inspiring stories

It's never too late, as proven by countless stories of athletes who defied age and expectations. Those listed above are far from the only ones—here's some more proof:

  • Ian Wright – He went pro at 22 and still became one of Arsenal's greatest strikers. Today, he's considered among the best footballers in the world.
  • Jamie Vardy – Vardy's professional biography includes working in a factory and playing non-league football. He joined Leicester City in his mid-20s and rose to stardom by helping his team win the Premier League in 2016.
  • Dennis Rodman – Rodman started playing basketball professionally in his early 20s. The result is 5x NBA Champion, 2x NBA All-Star, and overall, an iconic player in both Chicago Bulls and NBA history.

The common thread in these success stories is not just about talent but persistence. These athletes didn’t necessarily fit the mould of the simple player. They also faced challenges and had their doubts, but they worked harder than their peers to prove themselves. We can agree that they succeeded, and their careers remind us that hard work pays off.

These athletes defied the conventional narrative that success in sports is limited to those who start early in life. Whether by chance, persistence or a shift in focus, they proved dedication, passion, and resilience can lead to success at any stage in life.

These stories challenge the traditional sports development path and inspire players who start late in life. It is never too late to start chasing your dreams.
