The annual General Public Survey shows that 72% of Swedish people have gambled in the last 12 months. More stats here.

The last few years have revealed that everyone, including Swedish residents, loves online gambling. According to a recent survey, about 72% of Swedish people gambled for money over a 12-month period.

Here’s a quick look at what the survey uncovered about the Swedes and their gambling habits.

A tell-all survey

The Swedish Gambling Inspectorate, Spelinspektionen, carried out the General Public Annual Survey to find out more about the gambling habits of residents. It’s an annual survey that also took place in 2021. The survey was done at the end of November 2022 in collaboration with SKOP.

The survey revealed several things, of which the first is that 72% of all Swedes gambled for money over the course of the past 12 months. This is on par with the results for 2021. Another result similar to that of the previous assessment is that 85% of players prefer to play from home.

71% of players in Swedish casinos participated in lotteries and number games, making it the most common form of gambling in the region.

Furthermore, 62% of players who participated in gaming throughout the year stated they are aware of the self-exclusion register, Spelpaus.se. This statistic went up by 3% from 59% in 2021.

Gambling and living costs

In the survey, Swedish residents were asked if they would gamble less due to living costs. The final results indicate that about 19% of Swedes will be cutting down on their gambling habits due to the increased cost of living.

10% said they’d cut down only a little, while 9% said they’d cut down on gambling activities a lot less. Interestingly, 78% of participants said price hikes wouldn’t have any impact on their gameplay. 2% stated they’d play a little more, and then there was the 1% claiming they’d play a lot more.

A good year for Swedish licensed gaming companies

Online gaming companies with a Swedish license had a total turnover of SEK 6.8 billion during the third quarter of 2022. This is a decent 7% increase compared to the same quarter in 2021.

A total of 81,300 people were banned from gambling via Spelpaus.se by the end of the third quarter of 2022.

What’s next?

The goal behind this survey by SKOP and Spelinspektionen is to assess and assist. The authority is there to give consumers the best tools for safe gaming. This is creating a balanced gaming market that is fair and transparent.

Another great concern is the attempt to reduce the potentially harmful social effects of gambling. It’s one of the reasons regulatory guidelines have been issued regarding responsible gambling provisions in 2021, which states that player behaviour must be monitored regularly.

Responsible gaming guidelines

The responsible gaming guidelines require operators to supervise all players constantly. This ensures that they can act promptly when noticing excessive gambling behaviours.

In terms of monitoring players, it means operators are expected to track how often they gamble, the duration of games, and their deposit behaviours. This is to determine whether players have a pattern of excessive gambling behaviour or could potentially be on the verge of developing one.

Another important note within the responsible gaming guidelines is that players between the ages of 18 and 24 years should be monitored closely.

The fight for Sweden’s regulated gaming industry

One of the survey questions addressed unlicensed gambling, and only 10% of Swedish gamblers stated that they could identify licensed sites. 21% said they might play at an unlicensed operator at some point.

The battle against unlicensed gambling sites is ongoing for Swedish authorities. The Swedish Government is working on a bill that will bring in permits for online gambling suppliers.
