Cap on sports adverts for Super Bowl 2024

news thumbnail image

A restricted number of sports betting advertisements were featured during the Super Bowl, which took place last Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Only a couple of league championships annually bring together massive crowds. Still, Super Bowl 2024 lived up to expectations, as the CBS Sports broadcast became the most-watched program in television history.

Each year, fans and sports bettors get ready to support their favourite teams and players as they step on the field. With the action on the field, sports bettors also join in on the fun, placing wagers and predicting the outcome.

Betting and sports walk hand in hand, but fans only saw only 2 sports betting ads throughout the game this year.

A cap on sports adverts

The Super Bowl occurred last Sunday, 11 February 2024, and fans were in an uproar over the new league season and, of course, the halftime show with Usher.

It's common for advertisements to appear regularly during sports matches, whether in the NFL or the NBA. This year, viewers enjoyed a limited number of betting ads throughout the Super Bowl broadcast.

NFL spokesperson Alex Riethmiller explained that the league has set limits on in-game sports betting advertising. And that sportsbooks only bought two adverts for broadcast before and during the show. The number of ads is less than the maximum allowed.

The new policies limit sports betting ads that run during live games. The cap is around one ad per quarter. Less than 5% of the ads will run are sports betting ads.

Protecting viewers

The NFL's executive vice president of communications, public affairs, and policy, Jeff Miller, says that the league falls under the many pro sports leagues against sports betting as it would undermine the fan's perception of the integrity of the game.

Sports betting has been legal for 6 years, and the main priority, according to Miller, is to maintain public confidence. With this mission in mind, the league must be mindful and limit the number of sports betting ads and how they're integrated into the live games.

According to Highhill, one of the biggest struggles is that the NFL gets blamed for sports betting ads even if they're not behind it. He says they are sometimes even held accountable for ads not running throughout their games but on other sports programs or radios. And at the end of the day, the NFL can't control ads everywhere.

When sports betting was legalised in 2018, sportsbooks quickly started advertising. There was a massive influx of sports betting ads online via print and digital outlets. With so many sports betting ads everywhere, customers began complaining. There were also complaints from recovering compulsive gamblers who stated it was a temptation that could affect their recovery.

Lawmakers also said they would not hesitate to restrict sports betting adverts if sportsbooks did it this way. Then, in April 2023, most of the major professional sports leagues of the nation created an alliance dedicated to responsible gambling ads.

Betting and the Super Bowl

Super Bowl 2024 emerged as the most-watched American television broadcast in a generation. CBS announced on Monday that the Sunday overtime thriller, showcasing the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers, averaged 123.4 million viewers, setting new Super Bowl viewership records.

Per the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Nevada, sportsbooks surpassed the state record for Super Bowl wagers, with a $185.6 million bet on the game, surpassing the previous mark of $179.8 million set in 2022.
