Portugal online gambling revenue climbs 14.4% in Q2

Portugal's online gambling revenue grew 14.4% in Q2 2026 to €328.2 million, while the SRIJ continued its crackdown on illegal betting operators.

Portugal's iGaming market generated €328.2 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Q2 2026. That's up 14.4% on the same period last year, with online casinos bringing in most of it.

The SRIJ also kept up its crackdown on illegal operators. So the licensed market is growing, but a large share of players still bet on unlicensed or blacklisted gambling sites the regulator doesn't oversee.

Portugal gambling revenue, tax and licences

The Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ) released the latest figures for Portugal's gambling revenue. The data shows a 1.4% increase from Q1 2026 too, but the total remained slightly below the €337.6 million reported for Q4 2025.

Even in a World Cup quarter, games of chance made up 61.9% of GGR. Sports betting took the remaining 38.1%.

Portugal's online gambling taxes rose 13.4% year-on-year to €92.1 million this quarter. By the end of June 2026, 17 authorised operators held 30 licences between them, covering sports betting, casino games and bingo.

The World Cup lifts online betting in Portugal

Sports betting GGR rose to €125.1 million. This is a 14.6% increase from Q2 2025 and a 4.7% increase from the previous quarter. Stakes reached €515.6 million, up 12.7% year-on-year but down 12.2% quarter-on-quarter.

Players staked less in Q2 than in Q1, but operators kept more of it: about €24 of every €100 staked, up from about €20.

The latest Portugal gambling statistics show football was still the dominant betting sport, making up 69.9% of stakes. Tennis (20.5%) and basketball (6%) trailed well behind. The FIFA World Cup was a major contributor, representing 28.3% of all football betting volume, even though the tournament only kicked off on 11 June.

Portuguese online casinos still bring in the most

Even with the rise in sports betting, games of chance remained the biggest source of revenue in Portugal's online gambling market. GGR from games reached €203.1 million, up 14.2% on Q2 2025, and stakes rose 13% to €5.69 billion. Online casino slots (listed as machine games by the SRIJ) took 81.6% of casino stakes.

Accounts and age profile

Registered player accounts stood at 4.91 million by the end of June, up 1% year-on-year. These figures count accounts, not players, as one player can have accounts with several different operators. Activity grew faster than the registration base. Here are some of the most telling statistics:

  • The SRIJ recorded 248,400 new accounts in Q2.
  • About 1.21 million accounts placed at least one bet, up 8.4% on Q2 2025.
  • 54.3% of accounts belong to people under 35.
  • People aged 18–24 opened 36.2% of new accounts, against 22.2% of the overall registered base.

April 2026 Customer Profile data from iGaming analytics firm Blask points to a similar picture. Its model puts 21% of players in the 18–24 bracket and 34% in the 25–34 bracket, so 55% are under 35.

SRIJ Portugal continues its crackdown

While the licensed market grows, the SRIJ is also cracking down on unlicensed online gambling operators.

According to a 2024 study by the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association (APAJO), a trade body for licensed operators, 41% of surveyed players used unlicensed platforms. Only 37.7% of those players acknowledged doing so. Their reasons for choosing unlicensed sites over licensed casinos in Portugal included:

  • Better odds
  • Higher bonuses
  • Wider range of games

That's the gap APAJO wants licensed operators to close.

At the time, APAJO president Ricardo Domingues said the industry and authorities should aim for at least 80% of bettors playing on regulated platforms. He said that if the rules allow licensed products to evolve to meet player expectations, more players would move into the regulated market.

In Q2 2026, the regulator sent 95 closure notices to illegal operators and requested 113 websites to be blocked. Since Portugal's online gambling regime came into force in 2015, the SRIJ has issued 1,834 closure notices and requested blocks on 3,043 websites, leaving only licensed Portugal online casinos to operate under its oversight.

As the crackdown continues, remember that an unlicensed site isn't overseen by the SRIJ. So if something goes wrong, getting help could be difficult.
