Between 1 April 2021 and 1 December 2021, GambleAware received numerous donations , of which not all were too generous. However, there were stellar donations from UK operators.
Bet365 is a leader in the field that also made an impressive €4 million donation . Entain is another big name that didn’t hold back in terms of donations and granted €4 million.
William Hill is not too far behind with a donation of €1 million . Hot on its heels is Betfred Casino (Petfre Limited) with a £93,714.91 donation and Platinum Gaming Limited (Unibet Casino ) with a nicely rounded £92,000 donation.
These are some of the highest donations that GambleAware received throughout 2021. Several smaller donations pushed up the total. This includes a £50,000 donation from Videoslots Ltd and another from Zecure Gaming Limited.
The latter operates top Betsson brands including Thrills Casino , Rizk Casino , and Guts Casino .
32Red Casino also made a £28,000 donation to the charity.
Some companies have made a promise to contribute to the charity, but their contributions are still outstanding. These contributions when paid will push up the total quite nicely.
888 Casino will be donating a total of £51,750 and Camelot UK Lotteries Ltd will give a total of £451,600 . The big industry name, Ladbrokes Coral Group Ltd, will be making a massive donation of £4,765,000 . Again, these donations have been promised but have not been made yet .
The gambling industry is stepping up
The contributions of the gambling industry to charity organizations such as GambleAware are made with the intent to increase gaming safety in the industry.
According to the culture secretary, Jeremy Wright, the idea is to increase social responsibility among online gambling operators. Wright believes they should assist in keeping players safe which means assisting in funding for research, education, and treatment of problem gambling.
A spokesperson for top UK gambling operators shared that the plan for 2022 is to support a rapid expansion of treatment for problem gamblers and increase the protection of the young and vulnerable.
Firms need to up their game
While top UK operators are contributing large amounts to charity organizations there are others who donate amounts that are considered an ‘insult’.
These gambling firms will donate as little as £250 to industry-funded addiction charities while making £30 million football shirt sponsorship deals. There’s nothing wrong with such sponsorships but there should be a balance, especially considering that responsible gambling is taking centre stage and gambling operators are expected to do their part in assisting with increasing safety within the industry.
While some gambling firms have started making larger contributions, others have been making much smaller donations. It is due to these actions that many argue the industry shouldn’t have the privilege of being able to sponsor football clubs. Nor should they have the opportunity to decide how much they want to donate to fund research, education, or treatment.
According to the Scottish National Party MP, Ronnie Cowan there is a need for a statutory levy to raise a substantial amount of funds.
