StatsDrone co-founder John Wright shares the story behind the tool, insights into the affiliate marketing industry, and what's next for innovations in online gambling.
When it comes to managing affiliate data, there's often chaos—from countless spreadsheets to scattered reports . That's the problem John Wright and his team set out to solve when they launched StatsDrone .
The platform aims to simplify affiliate program tracking and centralise performance metrics. Currently, it's one of the most popular tools in the online gambling industry . So, we sat down with John to talk a bit more about StatsDrone, responsible gambling, and what the future holds for the industry in terms of tech, AI, and innovations .

CasinoWow's sit-down with John Wright
CW: Hi John, thank you for agreeing to speak to us! We’re excited to hear your take on some of the trending topics that the gambling industry faces today. But before we dive into that, tell us more about StatsDrone and your inspiration for it.
JW: Thank you! StatsDrone was inspired by a few things but it is a combination of my background as an engineer along with seeing problems in affiliate marketing that nobody was doing anything about.
On the operator side, when I used to do affiliate management, it was difficult getting affiliates to update bonuses and content. As an affiliate, we have to maintain databases of the same data points. Also, I found that many affiliates were not as focused on data as I thought they could be. The core idea of StatsDrone was not just to help optimise revenue for affiliates but to address revenue leaks.
CW: Now we are seeing a rise in Sweepstake casinos , which are getting more and more popular with many unusual practices and out-of-the-box releases. What do you think about that?
JW: I hate to admit it but we’ve not had a lot of innovation in iGaming for almost 20 years. Sweepstake casinos are one new product along with crash games, but aside from that, I think we’ve taken things for granted and produced too many casinos that look the same and too many slots that are all sameness.
iGaming needs innovation, and I almost don’t care where it comes from. Sweepstakes were more of a legal playbook, in my opinion, no different than DFS, but it did push the industry forward.
CW: We’re seeing Sweepstakes casinos, more and more crypto casinos (with their own games like crash games ), and the implementation of AI in the making of games and casinos. What else do you think we can see in the near future? What can the gambling industry expect?
JW: I think what we should be seeing is hyper-personalisation where AI just makes things better. AI should be doing more than doing the design work, but helping on user testing, making better products, ideation and just having these new magical CRMs that know what to say to players next and when.
I think some of the CRM tools like Fast Track, Optimove and Retention Studio will be in the discussion when it comes to AI and innovation.
CW: At CasinoWow, we are dedicated to responsible gambling and have done a lot of projects on the topic to raise awareness and get more people involved. What initiatives do you think are the best, and how do they reach more players? And have you been involved in any RG initiatives?
JW: For me, I’m glad to see CasinoWow be proactive in this regard. I am a volunteer and on the Board of Trustees at BetBlocker so responsible gambling is something I care about a lot. I’m glad to see more sites provide content on RG initiatives as well as the big iGaming conferences that are essentially donating stands for RG organisations.
CW: To end this talk on a positive note, can you tell us what you are working on with StatsDrone and what we can expect from you by the end of this year?
JW: I can’t share everything as I’ve got worthy competitors that sometimes read these things but we are working on link management tools for affiliates and at some point will be building more adtech tools. On the affiliate analytics side of things, we are rolling out postbacks and working on player engagement reports.
Personally, I’m very pumped about the work we have in front of us this year, and I can’t wait to do more product launches and announcements.
The future is responsible
We are looking ahead with the goal of more innovation, AI-assisted insights , and a bigger focus on the market's commitment to safer and more enjoyable gameplay . Yes, this means better data, but it also goes to using that to promote safer and more transparent practices for all involved in the gambling industry.
We'd like to thank John for taking the time to share his professional journey and vision for the future with us. It was a pleasure !
And as always, we are leaving you with a reminder to play responsibly —set limits, stay informed, and gamble for fun !
