What Changed in Alberta's iGaming Market After One Month

One month after launch, Alberta's iGaming market is still growing. The new rules changed a lot for players. Ontario shows what could come next.

Alberta's regulated online gambling market opened on 13 July 2026. Play Alberta is no longer the province's only legal operator.

Since then, the focus has shifted from launch-day headlines to a harder question. Can the province repeat Ontario's success and persuade players to leave offshore websites for Canadian online casinos? One month in, the answer is only half clear.

What went live and what's still coming

Twenty-two licensed platforms went live when the Alberta iGaming market opened, including familiar names such as

bet365
BetMGM
Caesars
DraftKings
FanDuel

Alongside them came operators including Betty, BetVictor, Casino Days, TonyBet and Golden Nugget Online Casino, giving players a far broader choice than the previous monopoly model ever could.

Around 50 operators had cleared registration before launch day.

Notably, most approved brands were still waiting in the wings. Betway, Betano, 888, Jackpot City, PartyCasino, and several SkillOnNet brands all sit among the next wave.

That number has kept climbing. By mid-August more brands were live than on day one, and AiGC CEO Dan Keene called the first month "encouraging".

What the new Alberta gambling laws require

While the expanded market brings greater competition, Alberta has repeatedly framed the project as a consumer protection initiative rather than a revenue exercise. Before regulation, the province estimated roughly 70% of its online gambling activity took place on offshore sites.

Alberta iGaming Corporation CEO Dan Keene said the objective was never simply to expand the market. Instead, he described it as a way to guide players towards safer, regulated platforms.

Every licensed operator must now meet the same standards for responsible gambling:

Age verification
Responsible gambling tools
Deposit controls
Self-exclusion

Operators pay 20% on gross gaming revenue. Before that share is worked out, 2% goes to First Nations communities and 1% to programmes that support research into gambling harm and mental health.

Players get something concrete out of this. Alberta runs a centralised self-exclusion system, so blocking yourself once holds across every licensed operator in the province. Ontario still has no equivalent. Deposit limits are enforced rather than optional, and a regulator will take your complaint if something goes wrong.

Before depositing anywhere, check that the brand sits on AGLC's registered operator list.

Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally also stressed that consumer protection remains the priority, especially for young people. He said those who choose online gaming "can do so in a safe and responsible environment."

What Ontario online casinos suggest about Alberta's odds

Ontario followed a similar path four years ago. Today, industry estimates put more than 90% of Ontario's online gamblers on casinos approved by iGaming Ontario. That shift came from opening the market to private operators rather than relying on a government monopoly.

That experience explains why expectations for Alberta run high. H2 Gambling Capital puts online casino revenue at around C$850 million for the fiscal year ending March 2027, with sports betting adding C$142 million. By year two the forecaster sees C$1.7 billion, and a regulated share of 87%, up from about 32% today.

For a province with fewer than five million residents, those figures would represent one of the strongest per-capita performances in North America.

These are projections, not results. Alberta has published no month-one revenue or channelisation figures, and the government's own tax estimate is a modest C$76 million for year one, well below what H2's forecast would imply. Ontario needed four years to reach 90%.

Could other provinces follow?

Online gambling regulations Canada relies on are set province by province. Alberta is now one of only two Canadian provinces where private operators can take bets under a local licence.

Several Canadian provinces continue to struggle against offshore competition despite operating their own government-run platforms.

British Columbia and Québec have both acknowledged that large numbers of players still gamble outside regulated provincial channels. At the same time, Atlantic Lottery has also recognised that significant market share remains beyond its reach.

That helps explain why Alberta's first month has attracted attention across the country. Ontario no longer stands alone, and if the province continues to channel players towards regulated operators while maintaining strong protections, pressure could build on other governments to reconsider their own models.

The next test comes on 13 October, the deadline for registered operators to launch or leave.

Alberta online casinos are only licensed if they are on the AGLC register. So make sure the site you pick is on it.
