Concerns regarding gambling harm spike as Brazil’s national self-exclusion system shows 462,831 registered users.
Brazil’s national gambling self-exclusion system has registered 462,831 users in just 4 months. At the same time, the government has implemented a nationwide ban on prediction markets.
As concerns grow regarding gambling harm and responsible gambling, more and more players opt for self-exclusion from casinos. All results point towards a shift in Brazil's gambling regulations, and we are here to follow the outcome.
The player safety net: Self-exclusion
The national self-exclusion system launched on 10 December 2025 and allows players to opt out of all licensed sportsbooks. The concern is that by April 2026, almost half a million bettors had signed up. This is, in itself, a clear sign of a need for safer gambling tools.
With the self-exclusion programme, players can choose how long they wish to opt out. This can range from a single month to indefinitely.
Based on the results to date, about 68.86% players opted for indefinite exclusion. About 20.75% chose one year. And 10% opted for shorter periods, ranging from 1 to 9 months.
The idea behind the system is to give players back control over their gambling habits. Once the block is activated, it applies to all licensed online casinos. When players self-exclude, they won’t be able to switch from one regulated site to another.
The rules are very strict. Once a player opts out, the decision stands. For indefinite exclusions, reversal is only possible after 12 months.
Why players choose to opt out
The primary reason Brazilian players choose to opt out is their struggle with control, as almost half of all self-exclusions cite this as a motivator for taking a break. The published data breaks down all the reasons as follows:
39.87% - Mentioned a loss of control, as they struggle to manage their gambling.
19.57% - There’s concern regarding data protection.
11.44% - These players stated that they have money problems.
13.68% - Stated it was a voluntary decision with no external pressure.
1.36% - Simply followed the recommendations of health professionals.
Based on these stats, it’s clear that opting out mainly covers concerns about gambling addiction. But, commonly, there are also other bigger concerns to address, including finance, privacy, and responsible play.

Brazil slams doors on prediction markets
In April 2026, Brazil’s government announced a nationwide ban on prediction markets. Effectively shutting down about 27 operators, including popular sites like Polymarket and Kalshi.
These prediction markets allowed users to wager on different types of real events, from elections to economic indicators and sports outcomes.
According to authorities, these platforms have managed to blur the line between gambling and financial speculation. This poses a risk both to players and the market integrity. It is all part of a bigger strategy to create a safer gaming environment where risky behaviour is limited.
Reshaping the gambling experience
Brazil’s regulatory direction is now clear. Self-exclusion numbers are rising, prediction markets are blocked, and the government is positioning player protection as its central concern. As gambling-related debts rise, these measures aim to stabilise the industry and reduce harm.
These small yet effective changes have us seeing a shift in the gambling experience, ensuring players get to have more control over playing responsibly and safer betting environments overall.
The need for these is clear; we have yet to see whether self-exclusion continues to rise and how the government handles prediction markets and the broader challenges of an open, legal market that is safe for players.
