    KSA reels in illegal gambling and boosts player protection

    Discover how the Dutch authorities pull out all the stops to curb illegal gambling and enhance player protection.

    For the online gaming industry, every day brings new challenges and rewards depending on how you look at things.

    With gaming authorities being more alert, there’s a list of changes being brought on in terms of gaming regulations. For Dutch online casino players, there is a significant amount of change and development on the horizon as the KSA intensifies its efforts to combat problem gambling and enhance player protection.

    This means that the Dutch Gambling Authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), is implementing stricter gambling regulations in the Netherlands and enforcement measures. The goal is to protect players and retain the integrity of the gaming industry.

    Illegal gambling app shutdown

    One of the first things on the KSA’s priority list is to remove illegal gambling apps. In fact, since the start of 2025, the KSA has managed to remove 20 illegal gambling apps.

    While these apps are disguised and come across as harmless, they’ve been used to redirect players towards unlicensed gambling sites. They went under the radar by falsely displaying branding from legitimate operators, only to direct players to unlicensed platforms.

    The KSA continues its shutdown efforts and urges players to report any suspicious apps to help authorities remove them all.

    An eye on unlicensed slot machines

    With the increase in taxes forcing many casinos to shut down throughout the Netherlands, the KSA has increased its oversight to ensure these gaming machines don’t enter the black market.

    The regulator warned buyers and seized any illegal equipment deemed necessary. According to reports, a recent operation removed dozens of unlicensed slot machines from an illegal casino in Hoogeveen.

    Record fines imposed

    The KSA has started imposing record fines on operators who engage in illegal online gaming activities. It will continue to enforce stricter rules to protect its players.

    This includes a looming ban on sports sponsorship, which will take effect in July. This move aims to reduce possible gambling harm and stop excessive advertising.

    With Dutch locals spending more and more on illegal online casino gaming, the KSA is currently working to implement stricter rules as a safety measure to protect vulnerable players. The authorities have also moved to ban gambling advertisements at major events like Zandvoort F1 to minimise exposure to an overload of gambling promotions and ads.

    A win for responsible gaming

    Some good news is that the most recent reports have shown a notable reduction in player losses, along with a significant decrease in big losses since the new responsible gaming policies were implemented back in 2024.

    That being said, there’s a concern regarding the increased spending within the illegal gambling market. This is one of the main reasons why the KSA has shifted focus and is determined to increase efforts on prevention and consumer awareness campaigns.

    What to expect in the future?

    With the KSA increasing its crackdown on illegal gaming, we can expect enforcement measures to continue to evolve. The top priority now is to ensure players have access to a safe and regulated gaming environment.

    These new measures align with years of fighting and Stricter penalties for Netherlands iGaming operators.

    As the enforcement measures continue to evolve, we can expect more shutdowns and possibly significant changes within the industry as the importance of responsible gaming practices is reinforced.

    Despite the range of restrictions players may see in their favourite Dutch online casino, there’s a bright side to safer gameplay and a decrease in fraudulent activity and targeting of vulnerable players.
